The Shadoplay Trio

Alex Hutchison has played bass since he was 16 and saw Jack Bruce in Cream in concert. His first band was Tycobrae, a Jimi Hendrix Tribute band. Alex played Progressive Rock for 10 years and then switched to Jazz Fusion in 1981. When Shadoplay performed on the main stage at Prince’s Island with Gib Monks, Neil Brant, Randy Doherty and Greg Stuart. Alex writes, produces and manages Shadoplay. Alex recorded in Rio. He alsorecorded in Vancouver with David Haney and Han Bennink. They also performed at Cantos. Recorded in Seattle with David Haney. Performed 6 years in a row at Réveillon, the Brazilian New Years Celebration with artists from Brazil. Performed 12 years in a row at the Calgary Jazz Festival.

Peter Strietman started playing guitar at 12 years old in his home country of the Netherlands, playing rock and pop but after being introduced to jazz music in his early 20's this has been his favorite music since. His acid jazz music project Jasu was used on MTV and Supah Ninjas. After moving to Vancouver in his early 30's he started Funk band Moustache Verticale. In Calgary, has played with Westwind's, Round Midnight, Jim Hutchison Jazz Works, Manhattan Beach Allstars and the Dunders and Jasu. Currently, he plays in the Schmoozers, Genevieve Phillips’ band and DZPC.

Ian Dickau has over 40 years' experience playing a variety of drums. In addition to appearing as a member of Shadoplay, he currently performs with the One World Drum Company and the band Scruffy Fish. Ian is also part of the accompaniment for the African Dance classes at the Decidedly Jazz Dance Company and U of C dance classes.

On December 22, 2023, we performed at the Bridge Christmas Party. On October 16. 2021, we played the Radiant in Banff. We played at the Asylum for Art on September 3, 2021, which was live streamed and videoed. Shadoplay has performed 3 times for International Jazz Days-KOI, Gravity and Lolita's. Performed at the Jack Singer for MusiCalgary. 13 years consecutively for the Calgary International Jazz Festival, the Yardbyrd Suite in Edmonton. Bowfest on Bowen Island, B.C. Shadoplay was #1 on CJSW with Norwegian Rat in 1985 and #3 with Tahiti Treat in 1996. Tommy Banks played them regularly on Arts Alberta, CKUA. The history of Shadoplay written by Dick Cowie in Hot Licks Magazine. Recorded live by CBC at Ace of Clubs. 7 years consecutively at the East Coulee Spring Fest. Performed at the Palliser Hotel with the L.A. North Dance Troup. L.A. North also performed with Shadoplay at Olympic Plaza for the Calgary International Jazz Festival. In 1993 they backed up Skywalk at Sparky's for the Calgary International Jazz Festival. They performed at Bowfest on Bowen Island, B.C. Four times at the Blues Can.
